Eldon Arms, Kingston, Corfe Castle, Dorset

Corfe Castle index

This pub seems to have changed its name, having been the Eldon Arms for a while. Both these names, however, come from the same person - John Scott, who was the first Lord Eldon. He was the Lord Chancellor for 25 years, spanning the reigns of both Kings George III and IV. This was a period of unrest and agitation for political reform and Eldon was staunchly opposed to any reform - apparently he even objected to the coming of the railways let alone giving more people the vote.
His county estate was Encombe, the entrance to which is very near to the Scott Arms. It seems very strange now to think that the small, sleepy little village of Kingston should have ever been considered worth attacking, but then its most famous resident at the time was the reactionary Lord Eldon, and that was why it was a target for people’s frustration and anger.
Mary Frampton, the daughter of a prosperous Dorset landowner, recorded her observations on the Reform Riots. Her journal entry for 5 November 1831 notes that:
"This morning intelligence was received that a mob from Poole were intending to attack Lord Eldon’s place at Encombe, and also Corfe Castle."
I believe that troops were stationed in the pub itself at this time , ready to stop 'the mob' from reaching Encombe. All very different from the chocolate box thatched cottage image which the area now enjoys. *
