Canning Town index

Clarendon Hotel, Dock road E16 was at the junction with Tidal Basin road. Dock road is on the right and the footbridge crosses a branch of the Stratford to North Woolwich railway, the main line ran down the other side of the pub. The area was a notorious bottleneck for road traffic leaving the Victoria docks. The pub, and many of the others in the area, were demolished during the building of the Canning Town flyover which opened in 1934. *

My great-grandfather, Alfred Herring was listed as the licensed victualler at the Clarendon Hotel, 1 Dock Road, Canning Town in the 1891 census, along with his wife Elizabeth [nee Bridges], their children Lily and Alfred George, plus my grand father, his sister-in-law Lavinia and her husband and some bar staff.
Lily married a guy named Ebblewhite in 1935 and they became the licensees at the Salmon and Ball on the corner of Bethnal Green Road and Cambridge Heath Road, in Bethnal Green. My grand aunt Lily ran the pub on her own until the early fifties when my dad took over for a few years when she became ill. She died in 1957.
My great - grandmother Elizabeth [nee Bridges] father, George Bridges was listed in the 1891 census as the licensed victualler at the Sir Robert Peel, 31 Skinner Street, Chatham in Kent. Originally, Alfred Herring and George Bridges were Mariners. ***
