I was one of the Bullard tribe before marriage. *
My grandfather Edmund Cole kept the White Horse at Buckland aided by my mum in his later years. We resided as a family of 5 with Grandad and maternal aunt Emily.
The pub was owned by Bishops brewery of Royston. I still have grandads contract with the brewery.
On his death the pub was offered to Mum but there was not a living so Dad had to work elsewhere and Mum could not cope with the pub and a small family of 3children; I am the youngest.

In 1921 at Buckland
Edmund Cole, Publican, Widow, aged 58 years and born in Milford, Hampshire, Own Account
Mary Louise Cole, Daughter, aged 13 years 2 months and born in Inkpen, Berkshire
Helena Frances Cole, Daughter, aged 6 years 7 months and born in Buckland, Hertfordshire
Emily Preston, Housekeeper, aged 60 years and born in Bagshot, Berkshire

The brewery also owned the pub in Dane End Therfield . I call it the grey horse but some call it the Greyhound. *
We moved in around 1949 and lived there for just under a year whilst the council houses were built in the local village of Buckland. We moved to Buckland 49/50.
I was only 4 but I do remember there were mice and a blacked range which Mum cooked on.
Therfield was the family home over many generationsand all generations had large families so I can relate to many folk in Therfield even these days. Casa Mia Dane End Therfield was the Bullard family home over centuries.
