William Howard born 1825 was a builder / contractor, licensed victualler and publican. He was married twice first to Matilda Green and is recorded on your site as Publican of the Fleur de Lys, Rochester Road, Burham, Kent in 1858 which is where their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1854. Williams birthplace is unclear brother John residing with them and a few doors down is their brother Joseph. After the death of William’s first wife he lived with my great great grandmother (no marriage found) Sarah Hannah Haddon, who adopted his surname, and renamed her son (my great grandfather) who started out as George Barker and then became a Howard in later documents (it took me years to untangle this lot!!). In 1871 William is listed as a Licensed Victualler residing in Anchor Lane, Worthing, W Sussex. Possibly residing in a pub of the same name but the census does not make that clear. I know he is advertised as a Contractor in the 1879 Worthing Street Directory . In the 1900’s they are residing in Alexandra Terrace in the Directory but are also recorded at Marine Place.
