My great grandfather, George William Barham, was publican of the Fighting Cocks from about 1905. He had been a ships steward and took on the Fighting Cocks when he retired from the sea, aged 51. He died in 1907 and his wife, Elizabeth Frances Barham, known as “Lizzie” took over the pub until after her daughter Grace’s wedding in September 1910. The wedding reception was held at the pub and Lizzie retired soon afterwards. *
