Queen Victoria, 43 Canning Street, Ancoats,  Manchester, Lancashire

Manchester pub history index

The address is at 43 Canning street as early as 1855, but prior to this appears to be at 33 Canning street, Woodward street. The Queen Victoria is noted in all directory entries, and is therefore road renumbering.

I discovered that there was a brewery on Canning Street. The brewery was founded in 1840 by Ellis Boardman, who was the father of Joseph Boardman. Ellis Boardman died aged 66 years in 1879, his death registered in the sub-district of Ancoats. *

Joseph Boardman and his family are at the Queen Victoria on Canning Street in 1881 until at least 1911. Presumably the brewery supplied the pub and may indeed have been part of it, or attached to it, or certainly on the same street. Indeed, the idea of re-numbering the street might be wrong. For example 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43 on one side of the street could represent the brewery, the pub and four houses. Also, the Queen Victoria could have come into existence in say 1840, three years after Queen Victoria came to the throne. Just an idea. *

There is a marriage in Stockport, in December 1840 between Henry Bond and Alice Vernon.

My 3rd great-grandfather Henry Bond and 3rd great-grandfather Alice Bond (née Vernon), appear to have been running the Queen Victoria in the 1850s. *
