Old Blind Beggar, 1 Green Street, Bethnal Green E2

Bethnal Green pub history index

Existed from at least 1793. This is a rather complicated situation. There was a pub called the Old Blind Beggar at the southern end of the Green by 1664 and it was still present (now at 1 Green Street) in 1829. In 1852 there was a pub at the same address (and presumably the same physical location) called the Falcon but by 1881 it was again called the Old Blind Beggar. The pub was re-built in 1887 and survived until at least 1941, again as the Falcon by 1899, but is now gone. [Green Street is now the Western half of Roman Road] ** The address for the Falcon, between 1856 to 1869 entries is at 1 Bethnal Green east. *+ It is consistently named as simply the Blind Beggar in the Sun Fire Office insurance records (not the Old Blind Beggar), and is named as the Falcon in all the Post Office directories from 1839 onwards, so it may just be the 1881 census return in which the Old Blind Beggar name makes a reappearance. The address is also given as 1 Victoria Park Square from 1882 onwards (which is what the street along the east side of Bethnal Green was renamed, intersecting with Green Street). *
