Old Jerusalem Tavern, 1 St Johns Square, Clerkenwell, London

Clerkenwell pub history index

This pub was established by 1741 within St John’s Gate. It traded variously as the Jerusalem Tavern, Old Gate and Old St John’s Gate Tavern, before settling down as the Old Jerusalem Tavern. This pub was actually originally inside the 1504 St John's Gate, originally built as the entry to the Priory of St John of Jerusalem. It closed at this site in 1874 when the gate was reclaimed by the Order of the Hospital of St John.  In 1876, a new pub was built alongside the old gate at 1 St John’s Square. This closed in 1914 or 1915 to become the headquarters of the Order of St John. **
