In the 1911 census, John Nicholas Petry was at the Swan, Leadenhall Market before going to the Old Bell. After 1911, John Nicholas Petry and his family moved to the Old Bell, 23 Wellington Street. In October 1915, WW1 bombs were dropped in the roads around the public house and 8 people died in the Old Bell. Also many others died in the surrounding area and many seriously injured. John Nicholas Petry and his family continued to live at 23 Wellington Street after the bombing. ***

In 1917, John joined the Army Service Corps and at times suffered with shell shock while serving with the armed forces in France. He returned to the Old Bell in 1918 and remained there with his wife until his death in 1932. John Nicolas Petry died in the Homeopathic Hospital, London. The coroner¹s conclusion was that he poisoned himself and his death was suicide while of unsound mind. The bombing at the Old Bell, 17 years earlier, along, with his war service in France was thought to be the cause of him taking his own life. ***
