West London Observer 08 March 1929
Referred for Compensation - Licence of the George Hotel, Fulham.
Application for renewal of licence of the George Hotel, 506 Fulham road, Walham green after objection against redundancy.
Within a quarter of a mile radius of the George there were 21 licensed houses - 8 of these being fully licensed, 5 beerhouses and 8 on licences.
Within 200 yards of the George there were 3 full licensed houses, 1 beer and 3 off licences. The nearest houses were the Red Lion, 68 yards away ; the Cock, 190 yards away, and the Jolly Maltsters (beerhouse) 190 yards away.
Majority of the customers were of working class, and snacks of break and cheese were provided.
Rev Propert said that the Guardians had more applications for relief from this particular area, and had seen the George crowded with people of the poorest class.
The house was an up to date one, and every year the licence had been renewed.
In 1914, LCC with Fulham Borough Council, were very anxious to widen the highway where the George was situated, and negotiations took place. An agreement was reached to move the frontage of the George back. After the war, in 1924, the house was put back on the grounds of redundancy, and referred to Quarter Sessions.
Now referred to Compensation Authority.
