Green Man, 1 Dartmouth Row, Blackheath, Greenwich SE10

Greenwich Index

The Green man was first opened circa 1629, when it was an important staging post for coaches on the Dover Road and was rebuilt around 1658, this building lasted until 1868. The coaches went out of business when the railways came, so the pub and its stables were demolished and replaced with a new pub and a row of houses, in Lansdowne Place, which opened in 1870. ** Note that the census returns place this pub in Blackheath (Lewisham) rather than Greenwich. *
These buildings lasted until 1970 when they too were demolished and replaced with a block of flats, Alison Close. **

The first photo is circa 1860, with landlady, Ann Witmarsh. The last, is circa 1900, with landlord James Parsons. **
