My great grandfather Richard Bullen is at the Blue Boar, Wantage in 1871 and at the Barnards Tavern in Old Holborn by 1881 - which no longer exists - he can also be found at the Duke of Sussex, Clifton Street, Notting Hill at this time (in Hammersmith).
The list of occupants in 1881 are :
Richard Bullen (born 1833) in Riddlesdown Sanderstead Surrey. (My great grandfather)
George E Bullen eldest of his sons by Jane Annette Dixon (father John Dixon)
Fanny Bishop was Richards niece by marriage, her maiden name was Webb; her mother was Martha Dixon elder sister of Jane.
Now, whether it was legal or not, Fanny became Richards partner until their deaths and my grandfather Frederick Bullen b 1884 was one of their sons.
Walter Bishop was Fannys son, by James Bishop, her first husband; and on the face of it her only husband legally. But Walter went on and used the name Bullen all his life.
Elizabeth Jarner which has been mis heard when enumerater took details because she and her sister Alice (mis transcribed as allex bad writing)were actually Garner.
Richards sister Frances was the girls mother. ***
