My maternal great grandfather was WILLIAM GARDNER. According to his probate, he was a licensed Victualler who died on November 28th, 1878 at the above noted tavern. His wife, according to his death memoriam was Frances Mary nee Elkington. We believe he married her in Australia in 1871. However we believe that he was still married to his first wife, Eliza at the time of his marriage to Frances Mary. Hence the change in her status from wife at his death to spinster when probate was proved. His Will was witnessed by one of his daughters , Louisa Gardner, who also lived at this tavern. *

In Memory of William Gardner The Beloved Husband of Frances Mary who departed life November 28th 1878. Aged 53 years, interred in the Family Grave at Brompton
