My grandad, Joseph William Hampson and his wife, Rosetta Frances Hampson ran this pub, I believe during the Second World War, with the help of my mother and her two brothers. **
I have often listened to the talk of air raids and how the windows were all blown in; and how they all, customers too, used to go down in the cellar when the raids were on. There was a piano... and they all carried on regardless...
My parents used to run the Crown & Anchor public house in Algernon Road, Lewisham for over 10 years.
They had it from 1963 I believe and it had been freshly rebuilt after the war and they were the first new owners.
The address was 43 Brookbank Road, having had it changed by the post office from 34 Algernon Road to avoid confusion.
My parents were David and Fay Slater.
After they left, two guys (both called Ray) ran it and it was demolished in 2013 I believe.
