Morning Advertiser - Friday 02 February 1866 *
(Part of a longer article entitled “Fires in Stepney”)
A third fire occurred at one o'clock on Thursday morning, at a beershop called the Rose and Crown, situated in Bridge-street, Mile-end. The alarm was given by the landlord, Mr. Harrington, to Police- constable Wheeler, 248 K, who lost no time in sending for the engines and escapes. Conductor Rickell, with his escape, was soon on the spot, and was seen to enter by the door and ascend the stairs.
Mr. Inspector Griffin, of the K division, thinking the escape-man was rather longer than usual, managed to ascend the staircase and enter the back room first Door where he found Conductor Rickell lying down, and partially suffocated with dense smoke, and with great presence of mind extricated him from this perilous position. The first engines to arrive were the parish engines from Mile End and Bow, but they were soon followed by those of the brigade.
The whole building was entirely destroyed, leaving only the walls, which it was feared would topple over. The light of the fire was visible a long distance, and caused a great crowd to assemble.
