[I worked here in 1979 for a period. I can’t remember for how long, but I was trying to save money for my forthcoming wedding that year. I had worked in pubs before, outside of London where the going rate of pay was £2.50 per session. The landlord of the Bull’s Head used to pay me £2.50 per hour.
I was a BT Engineer in the City of London at that time and was finished by 17:00 hrs when the pub opened. The chef always had Something for me to eat before he went home. The restaurant on the second floor was only open at lunchtimes.
If it was quiet, the landlord would let me go after a couple of hours, but generally, I was there until 22:30 hrs when it shut. I had a short walk to Fenchurch Street station for my train home. An attraction of the job was the pub wasn’t open at weekends.
The landlord and his family lived over the pub on the top two floors. The bar was narrow, but long. There was a basement which, from memory was extensive.
I left BT in 1987 to join Essex Police. It wasn’t until some years later that I learned the pub had been demolished and along with the surrounding building for a large, modern structure. This was a great surprise to me as this Georgian (at least) building had some history and I was surprised it wasn’t saved by the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) whose offices were not far away in Spitalfields. However, money talks and somehow they, and the Corporation of London, were persuaded it should be demolished. Such a shame. *** ]
