Address also given as 52 Beech Street. In an Old Bailey case of 1848, this pub was referred to as the “Kings Arms, sometimes called the Cat”. It is also named as the Kings Arms in planning
documents relating to its rebuilding in 1897. It may be therefore that its proper name is actually the Kings Arms, with Cat initially more of a nickname. (including evidence that it was present as the Kings Arms prior to 1832). *** The LV Asylum Association lists it as the Kings Arms in 1827.

With an overlay of a map of Upper Whitecross Street (the 1862 Motco) with house numbers and pub names and from various directories I have worked out where
all the Pubs including the Cat were. The Cat is mentioned in two Old Bailey trials in the early 1800s. The numbers started on the East side at
Chiswell Street with 66; went North to Old Street to 150 and then carried on South back to Beech St with 220 where the Cat was, just before Beech St.
When the Street was renumbered; Whitecross and Upper Whitecross St were combined, and the numbering started at the south end, odd on one side and even on the other. That is how the Cat became 57.
