would be Ernest Weber. There was a large German community in this area at
the time and the road was known locally as Charlottestrasse. The long
building on the left is the Prince of Wales Theatre, This was redeveloped in
1903 into the Scala Theatre and the pub was demolished at this time. **
The Scala Theatre was demolished in 1969 and the present building on the
site, Scala House was built. This building had a small art cinema in the
basement, The Scala Cinema, which is still going, now based in Kings Cross.
In the 1980s it was the first home of Channel 4. Currently it is a mix of
business and residential. **
