Regent Street was renamed Regency Street (its name today) some time between 1871 and 1881, but house numbering was not changed. This house stood on the corner of Regent Street and Page Street. On 16th March 1859, Alfred Fowler, whose mother had kept the Two Brewers in Tufton Street for 20 years, was granted a Spirit Licence for the premises, to which a music hall was attached. The pub was called The Telegraph, and is so named in the 1861 Census. A year or two later, a new Music Hall called The Regent was erected partly on the site of the old one, and a bar installed operating under The Telegraph’s license. The police doubted the legality of this, and on 21st March 1865 the magistrates, after much discussion, granted a license to the whole premises under the name of The Regent. (Information from The Era of 5th June 1859 and 26th March 1865). In the 1871 Census, the pub (unnamed) was at No. 21, with the “Regent Music Hall” (no inhabitants) at No. 23. In 1891, the (still unnamed) pub was at No 21 with a lone night-watchman at 23, which was hence possibly still a music hall. * By 1899, this is again the Telegraph, at 21 Regency street.
