Swan / St Stephens, 10 Bridge Street / Cannon Row, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

The List of Masonic Lodges of 1740 - 1755 note that a masonic lodge met at the Swan, Westminster Bridge with a constitution date of May 13th 1754 .

The pub was established by 1750 as the Swan Hotel . It originally stood next to the river, and the address was 1 Bridge Street in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses. Newspaper references up to about 1845 mostly give the address as “Westminster Bridge”, and refer to the hotel by its proprietor’s name (e.g. “Ireson’s Hotel” in 1802). It was demolished in 1868 to build Westminster Station on the Metropolitan and District Railway, and the license transferred to the present site, on the corner of Bridge Street and Cannon Row, with its address varying between 10 Bridge Street (1871 and 1881 Censuses) and 10 Cannon Row. In 1886 it was re-built and re-named the St Stephen's Tavern. By 1924 the pub was expanded to incorporate the former Queen's Head, which had also stood in Cannon Row. The Queen's Head was apparently also known as Lucas's. St Stephens was closed in the late 1980s and re-opened in 2003.
My picture was taken in November 2007 with the former Swan part of the St Stephen's Tavern visible at the street corner and the former Queen's Head part visible in yellow brick to the rear. ** / ***

The photographer is standing on Westminster Bridge (opened 1862) looking towards what is now Portcullis House. The white wall in front of the Westminster was removed when the Victoria Embankment was completed in 1870.

There a number of newspaper references to “Ginger’s Hotel, Westminster Bridge” between 1840 and 1846. The most interesting, however, are a whole spate of references in February 1858 to a Mr Thomas Allsop, an engineer who designed the explosive device used in the attempted assassination of the French Emperor, and who lodged there. ***
