Olivers Coffee House, 28 Bridge Street, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

The original Oliver’s Coffee House stood in New Palace Yard to the right of the entrance to Westminster Hall. It dated from at least the early 18th Century (tickets for a concert of music by “Mr Handell” were sold there in 1731), but was demolished in 1822 to build new Law Courts. It then moved to the south side of Bridge Street (No. 28) at the foot of Westminster Bridge. It was badly damaged in 1843-4 when part of it fell into the excavations for the foundations of the Clock Tower (Big Ben) for the new Houses of Parliament; the proprietor, Mr Mansell, sued the contractors, Messrs Grissel and Peto, and won compensation. It was finally closed and demolished in the late 1850s during the construction of the New Westminster Bridge, opened in May 1862. *
