Paxtons Head, 153 Knightsbridge, Westminster London SW1X 7PA

Westminster St Margaret index

This house was established as the “Kings Arms” at least as early as 1632, according to the Survey of London. It changed names several times, and was called the “Marquis of Granby” by 1821, and probably earlier. It was rebuilt around 1851 and re-named the “Paxtons Head” in honour of Joseph Paxton, the designer of the Crystal Palace. I am not sure of the exact date of re-naming: the Survey of London implies it was when it was rebuilt, but the official application to the licensing magistrates was in 1868. However, the stable yard behind it was called “Paxton yard” by 1862. It was at 153 Knightsbridge by 1910. *
