Trevor Arms, 231 & 233 Knightsbridge, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

Opened in 1844 as a beer-house, this house stood on the corner of Knightsbridge High Road and Charles Street. It became a pub in 1847, and a music-hall was erected behind it in the 1850s. The address changed to 231 & 233 Knightsbridge in 1908. The pub survived until the late 1950s, when it was pulled down to build an office block, Mercury House, itself replaced by a high-class apartment building called “The Knightsbridge” in 2002.
[Note on dates: 1) According to The Survey of London Vol. 45, the Music Hall behind the Trevor Arms was first licensed in 1854. However, there is a report in The Standard of Oct 12th 1857 about the prosecution of a builder for obstructing the highway; the builder stated he was “building a large concert hall to the Trevor Arms”, so perhaps the 1854 license was simply a music and dancing license for the pub. 2) According to the same Survey of London, Mercury House was built in 1956-9, so presumably the pub was demolished by or soon after soon after 1956, while a book called “The London Season” by Louis T Stanley, published in 1956, speaks glowingly of the pub as a going concern.] ***
