My maternal grand father, Charlie Edwards was the licensee from the early 1900's (married about 1904), until his death in Aug 1946. The photo shows him outside the saloon bar entrance before the First World War. ***

15 March 1910/Church street houses :
Mr C Atkins, surveyor to the justices explained that Church street ran parallel to the river, and was the main road leading from Woolwich to Greenwich.
A great amount of traffic passed there daily, but in some parts the roadway was very narrow, so much so that only one line of trams could be run.
The houses and shops were on one side only, the riverside being occupied by the Government Dockyard, which was separated from the road by a wall.
With regard to the Golden Cross, Mr Atkins said that the house was well furnished, and fitted with tables and chairs so that men from the Dockyard could have their meals there.
There were 800 men employed in the Dockyard. There were under consideration at present schemes for electifying the tramway line. A good deal of the trade came from Orchard street and Orchard place.

A police officer gave evidence that there were 16 houses within a quarter of a mile.
Counsel submitted that the Golden Cross was one of the best houses in the road. It was generally agreed that the trade had been depressed at Woolwich in recent years, but the trade at the house was a big figure still. The actual bar takings were over £1,000 a year, and a large trade was done in bottle beer./Woolwich Gazette
