In the 1911 census, Salvatore Galea (born in Malta) was the publican. Previously he had been a coachman in the service of the Rev. Richard Hooker-Wix, Vicar of St Michael and All Angels church in the parish of Swanmore, near Ryde, Isle of Wight, where he married and raised four children. Between 1884 and 1891 he returned to England and became a Corn Merchant, a business in which his son William Salvatore Galea succeeded him. Salvatore Galea’s wife, Jane, died in 1903, at which time he was a Cab-Proprietor, but by 1911, according to the census, he was a publican at the Jolly Gardeners. He died in September Quarter 1922 at the age of 76. *
