William Lancefield is son of John Lancefield, licensee of the Old Kings Head, Oxford street., and had married in 1831 to Sarah Maria Druce and in a book titled “The Portland Peerage Romance” by Charles F. Archard (1907) there is the tale of a Mrs Druce claiming in 1898 that her son was the Duke of Portland.*
From census return of 1851 it seems he took the family to Texas, as his daughter was born there 1842; but by 1844 the family was back in Marylebone living at 3 Cunningham Place, St John's Wood. In the 1851 census he is listed as Clerk to a Distillery but from about 1855 until his death in 1864 he was licencee of the King's Head Hotel in Harrow. *
The local library has copies of the newspapers which contain several references to him including a complaint by one of the boys at the school that Mr Lancefield doubles the fare on his coaches on the first and last days of term. He duly responded that the charge was justified because of the extra work for men and horses. The report of his death noted that he was a member of the Harrow Rifles and that the shops in the town closed for a half day out of respect for their fellow tradesman when his funeral was taking place. His only son, George Frederick Lancefield (born 1846) was licencee of the Fleece Inn at Witney in Oxfordshire but his time there was short as he died in February 1890. *
