Just pre WW2 the pub was taken over by Bill Colley and his wife. They retained it until they were very elderly and infirm. It was then taken over by... *

1964 - 1971 David & Valerie Carey (nee Hart). Valerie had one son (me) and later they had a daughter, Samantha Jane. *

It was a tied house, previously Friary Meux but, of course Allied Breweries in our time. It was originally two farm cottages from the late 18th century that were joined to form a pub after Waterloo. An army colonel gave it to a sergeant who had served with valor. I think that's the story, it was 50 years ago. *
