High Wycombe pub history index

Directory of Pubs in the UK, historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in Buckinghamshire. The Buckinghamshire listing uses information from census, Trade Directories and History to add licensees, bar staff, Lodgers and Visitors.

The following entries are in this format:

Year/Publican or other Resident/Relationship to Head and or Occupation/Age/Where Born/Source.

My 2x great grandfather William ABBOTT was twice the Licensee of the Swan Inn, Paul's Row, High Wycombe. According to Pigott's Trade Directory he was the Licensee there between 1842 and 1850. At the time of the 1851 census he was "Out of business” and living in Little Kingshill, Buckinghamshire with his wife and six children. Two more children were born there, Joseph and Sarah Ann ABBOTT. In 1857 William again took over the license for the Swan Inn. *

BOROUGH PETTY SESSIONS. SATURDAY, JAN 17.
(Before William Henry Hayden, Esq., and W. J. Gregory, Esq.)
TRANSFER OF LICENSES. -The license of the Swan Inn transferred from Alfred Heald to William Abbott. *

William died there on 9 Jun 1858.  *
Bucks Herald, Sat 26 Jun 1858 :
DEATHS. Abbott.—On the 9th instance, at the Black Swan, Marketplace, High Wycombe, Mr. William Abbott, aged 53 years.
The newspaper report gives the address as the Black Swan but his death certificate gives it as Swan Inn.
His widow Maria ABBOTT (nee TILBURY) took over the license. My great grandfather Joseph ABBOTT’s obituary states "His mother, whose husband, Mr. William ABBOTT, died many years ago, was for a long period licensee of the Swan Inn, Paul's Row, High Wycombe.” Certainly she was the licensee at the time of the 1861 census. *
