The "brewhouse" at Great Warley had been bequeathed to Thomas Foker by his father-in-law Daniel Cross
in his will (proved 1828) which establishes both the ownership and existence of the place to before that date. ***
In the 1841 Census Susannah is shown as living at "Kits Slough" which is where the brewery / public house was located. In 1851 the resident
(and owner) is actually Mrs Susannah Foker (nee Cross) - the widow of Thomas Foker. The surname is shown in the census as "Foaker". ***
Susannah (Cross) Foker was my 3xgt grandmother through her daughter Frances
who married Joseph Roots and their daughter Roseanna. During the 18th & 19th Century, there were many Cross & Foaker famlies living in Great Warley & Ingrave. I understand the Fox was replaced in1903 by cottages,
at 180-188 Ingrave
Road. *
Thomas' son William came back to take over the pub in 1874 but it did him no good in the end. His wife took their 4 young children and left him in 1884
and William finished up in the Romford Union Workhouse by 1891 where he died 6 years later. ***
