My Great Great Grandfather James Emerson, was a Publican from 1861 to 1871
at the Hare & Hounds, Blackwall. He originally came from Alford in
Lincolnshire. The 1871 Census confirms that most of his family had moved
from the Hare, up the road to Boyton Cross, their occupations then became
carpenters/wheelwrights. The family remained in the Chelmsford area for the
next 10-15 years. **
Tracking my Gr Grandfather also a James Emerson, he became the Publican at
The Willows or Three Willows
Birchanger, circa 1899 for some 8 years and remained in the Bishops
Stortford area, where we still have James's extended family living
there. **
James's brother Frank, also became involved with the Chelmsford Breweries
and then moved to Hitchin St, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire to run the Black
Bear (shown on Census 1901).
Wherever I track I can find family either working as Master Brewers at
Sawbridgeworth/Bishops Stortford or, as my Grandfather Frederick Emerson did
in his youth, drive steam engines - up to Bury St Edmunds, also for Taylors.
Frederick Emerson married a daughter Eva, from a very successful Publican
family from Sawbridgeworth, who ran the
George IV _ James
Broad and his eldest daughter ran The Fox. **

My Grandma Mrs Alice Letts was the landlady of the Hare
@ Hounds until September 1943. It was then handed over to my stepfather Jack
Reynolds and my mother Doris Reynolds at that date and remained in the
family until June 1979 whereon my mother died. The name difference was due
to the fact that my father Bernard Mays died in 1937 who was the
illegitimate son of Alice Letts and he was born in 1909. Jack and Doris
produced two sons Raymond and Richard Reynolds, sadly Richard died in
November 2000.
