White Hart, Newland Street, Witham

9th January 2001

Residents at this address.

I have been researching the above pub during studies with the IHGS. Reference Q/SR 181/12 – 15/7/1607 (i.e. from Quarter Session records). *+

'Recognizance of William Havin of Witham and Robert Merchante of Hatfield Peverel, yeomen, for Francis Merchante of the same, victualler, to keep good order in his victualling house called the White Hart, at the same. Taken before John Darcy, esq., by virtue of an order made at the Sessions held on 2 July.'

There is an entry in the rental records of the manor of which the pub formed a part (ERO, reference D/DBw M63). The entry is from and for the year 1680, and is as follows: *+

' Rentall of Manors of Newland and Chipping Witham :
No.27 of Luce (Luke) Blackman formerly of (space) Armiger Esq in the right of his wife for a messuage or Inn called the White Hart with the appurtenance concerning two roods now in the occupation of Samuell Joslyn £0 1s 1d.'

Thus Luce Blackman was the owner in 1680. *+

By a conveyance dated 29/9/1819 the White Hart was transferred to John Crump (both ERO ref D/DB T192) *+

1/6/1824 – the Land Tax Assessment shows John Crump as proprietor, paying tax at £7 4s 0d. (ERO ref D/DB T192) *+
