My great grandfather, Walter Bennett ,who was a dray driver for Wrights Brewery in Walkern. It seems that he met his end outside The Boot pub by falling off his dray and running over his own neck. *
Fatal Accident to a Walkern man.
On Thursday Mr T J Sworder, coroner, held an inquest at the Boot Inn, Aston, respecting the death of Walter Charles Bennett, a carman, aged 33 years, in the employ of Messrs Wright & Co, of Walkern, brewers and mineral water manufacturers, who was killed by being run over by a van which he was driving on Tuesday night.
Henry James, of Walkern, said he was with the deceased on a two-horse van on Tuesday night. At 9.50 they left the Boot public house, Aston, where they had left some minerals. They drove on slowly until they reached Brook's Hill. There the deceased pulled up for witness to put on a skid. The horses became restive, and backed knocking down a post. When witness looked up he found the deceased was gone off the vehicle. He obtained assistance, and the body was found under the van, near one of the wheel-tracks, life being extinct.
David Warren, of the Boot Inn, deposed to finding the body, and stated that in his opinion the wheel of the van had passed over deceased's neck.
Police Constable Brackley, of Aston, stated that when he saw the body deceased's head was lying in the wheel track.
Dr Dunn, of Stevenage, stated that death was due to injuries received by being run over by a van. Witness considered there was quite a ton weight on the van.
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. *
