In the 1939 list, I found three occupants – Mrs Maria Howard (widowed), William C. Taylor (civil servant Air Ministry), and Florence May Taylor (unpaid domestic duties). Mrs M Howard’s daughter Florence May and her husband took over the pub after her. Florence May had married William C. Taylor in 1927. She ran it until the 1970s. It had not been a pub for two years when we bought it in 1980. Mrs Howard died in Tring in 1984. *

The Britannia was previously owned by Benskins. Benskins was taken over by Ind Coope, who sold the property to us in September 1980. *
