Wellington Tavern, 9 The Esplanade, Ryde, Isle of Wight

The Duke of Wellington between 1859 and 1898. The address exists as at 7 Pier street until the 1930s when Pier street is enveloped into a section of the Esplanade. It is also suggested that the current buildings in Pier street were demolished as the street was very narrow. But, at the same time all the buildings are suggested to being listed Grade II; so I am presuming for a moment that parts of Pier street was enveloped as part of the Esplanade. The modern address was therefore 9 The Esplanade. The Wellington was demolished in about 1975.

My father was the licensee of the Wellington Tavern but unfortunately cannot say the date he started. His name was Frank Gillespie. He died in about 1972. My mother Terry Gillespie ran the pub for as long as she could but unfortunately it closed in 1975-76 a few years after his death.
The address at that time was known as : The Wellington Tavern, 9 The Esplanade, Ryde, Isle of Wight. *
