William Newing, was living at 19 Queen Street, Gravesend with his family at the time of the 1851 census. He is also confirmed in the 1851 diretory. *

William’s marriage certificate for 16th September 1845 shows that his occupation then was as a publican. William was born in about 1824 and as we know that he died in 1851 aged 27, he wouldn’t have been the Licensee for long. His wife and his younger son also both died in 1851. His elder son, John William, who was born in 1847, was therefore orphaned at the age of 4. He became my wife’s Great grandfather. William Newing, was there ‘at the time of the 1851 census’ is not strictly correct. The reason is that William died on 20/3/1851 which was 10 days before the 1851 census which was held on 30/3/1851. But the inclusion that William is shown in the 1851 Directory is entirely correct. *

William’s wife and then widow was named Catherine Bennett Newing (nee Simeson). At the time of the 1851 census, the elder of William and Catherine’s two sons, John William Newing (my wife’s Great grandfather) aged about 3years 8 months were living at ‘The Ship' in Bath Street Gravesend where Catherine's sister, Mrs Ann Browning (herself a widow at the time of the 1851 census) was the Licensee. *
