East London Beer Guide & Pub directory in 1991 - E16 Silvertown

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in London.

    1991 Beer index

The 1991 edition of the East London Beer Guide - East London & City CAMRA

    E16 Silvertown
Stations - Canning Town, Silvertown, Custom House and North Woolwich (BR North London). The DLR Beckton extension is due to open during the currency of this Guide.
Victoria Dock is a misnomer for this area, centred on the Royal Docks and covering those parts suggested by the names of the stations. It is the only area in this Guide with an airport, albeit sadly under utilised and only really useful if you plan to start your trip here in Paris. New development has been much slower than in the Isle of Dogs and whilst some genuine industry is still functioning (such as the Tate & Lyle refinery), many parts appear derelict and forgotten, especially around the Docks which were once the largest in London. This is reflected in the pubs, which often are sadly lacking in trade - and many have been closed in recent years.
Around Canning Town postwar rebuilding led to a range of Big Four estate pubs, although older establishments are to be found around the docks. At North Woolwich (once part of Kent) a small community clusters around the Woolwich Ferry and foot tunnel, and a railway museum has been established in the station.
