Jack Grumball is second from the right. My uncle, Maurice Lodge

Jack Grumball is second from the right. My uncle, Maurice Lodge is in the doorway next to Jack (and third from the right) and my father, Fred Grumball, is in the doorway next to Maurice (and fourth from the right). I dont know the other three men in the photo, but guess the others are friends of the family or regulars at the pub.

I am the Grandson of John William Grumball who was a publican at the Star & Garter during WW2. He was born 5 August 1891 at 140 Clifton Road, Croydon, and died at 6 Gibson Avenue, Wembley, on the 27 February 1951. He had very much hoped to continue at the pub after the war, but this was not possible I gather from my uncle that the tenancy was returned to the original publican when he returned from military service. ***

My paternal Grandparents, Frank & Eliza Maria Wakeling, were the licensees here, at the time of the Coronation (1953), I remember all the red, white and blue stars they put up as decorations **

The Star Music Hall, along with the Star Public House, were demolished in 1963; and the site is today home to the Bermondsey Community Centre and a small park.
