Existed from at least 1827. The street is historically called Nelson Street, Boundary Street is now named Horatio Street. Early addresses also include Nelson Street, Friars Mount. At 27 Nelson Street in 1861 census. It is named in directories as Fournier Street for a period. **

My maternal 3x Great grandfather was William Hookham, (1798-1845). The
Hookham family were deeply involved with the licensed trade, to the extent
that in his will, William instructed his executors to sell off his leasehold
property, which I believe included an undetermined number of public houses
and offer the proceeds to to the local brewers, Truman, Hanbury and Company,
so long as they would "pay interest thereon at or after the rate of five
pounds per centum per annum and without requiring any security for the
same". If Truman, Hanbury and Company were not prepared to accept his terms,
the money was to be invested in Government stocks and the product used as a
Trust for his heirs and successors. I have not discovered which of these
options was adopted, but several of the next generation were also publicans.

Before fetching up at the Victory, during the 1830`s, William Hookham is
described both as a Brandy merchant and Wine merchant at unspecified
addresses in Spitalfields. He and Elizabeth lived during most of that time
at Myddleton Street, Clerkenwell or Union Street, Spitalfields. The first
documentary record of him at the Victory is in the 1841 Census. *
At the time of making his will, (7th. July, 1845,) he was the incumbent of
the "Victory", Friar`s Mount. This is stated in the will. His (second) wife
was born Elizabeth Wilkinson and I suspect that Mary Wilkinson, the licensee
from Robson`s directory in 1842 is William`s wife`s sister. *
The other thing we learn from his will, (of which I have found no earlier
mention,) is that he has a braid - making business. Having done some
research on this I find this is silk braid for upholstery and uniform
decoration and the like, which the weavers took to as the trade fell into
decline. I suspect it simply amounted to buying the output of individual
struggling artisans for a few coppers, only to take it off them again,
either by way of rent or at the pub. *

Joseph Jacobs, (who took over the Victory from William Hookham and his family, and whose own family as far as I can see, ran the pub until it was demolished to make way for Arnold Circus,) was Head of the Bethnal Green Vestry Sanitary Committee. It must have been because of sheer corrupt influence, rather than gratitude of the populace, that his name was celebrated during his lifetime in "Jacobs Street", running parallel to
Nelson Street. *
