December 1899/A serious explosion of gas occurred at noon yesterday in the Oglander Tavern, Oglander Road, Peckham. The whole house was wrecked, not one of its 12 rooms escaped serious damage. A young man named George Woodridge, who is 22 years old, was terribly burnt around the face and body, and had one of his legs broken. He was at once removed to a hospital. My sister and I were brought up in this London pub from 1949 until 1962.My father became the youngest Courage tenant at the age of 29!
I have a lot of wonderful memories of those years. My father was Kenneth George Byne and my mother Phillis Olive (Ken & Phil).
His father had the Holydale Tavern and helped train him for him to be able to take on his own pub. ***
