On my great great grandfather's birth certificate, it states that he (Frederick Newton) was born on 29th April 1859 at The Rising Sun, Vernon Street, Fulham. His father was John Newton, licensed victualler, born in Braceby, Lincs (abt 1817) and his mother was Ann Newton (nee Tuffnell). ***

Two years later (1861) John and Ann were running the Prince Albert in Sherborne Street, Marylebone. ***

According to the 1861 census, the landlord (licensed victualler) that year was my great great grandfather Alexander Jackson. As he was in fact a master tailor we assume his wife Louisa actually ran the pub. Don't know how long they stayed there but they had moved on by 1871. *+

The Pidgeon Family : The Rising Sun, at 1 Vernon Street, is being run by Emma Payne in 1881. She was born Emma Pidgeon at Kenton, Devon in 1840. In 1863 she married Charles Tucker, and they had a daughter Mary Ann in 1865. Two years later Charles died. Emma's sister Mary had married Henry Payne and they had been running the Red Lion at 81 Paradise Street, Rotherhithe when Mary died in 1873. Two years later Emma married her sister's widower, and it was she and Henry Payne who were at the Rising Sun in Fulham when Henry died shortly before the 1881 census. *

Contrary to what is shown in the 1881 census, I believe the 25-year-old Emma Payne was the elder Emma's niece, another Emma Pidgeon (born at Ashburton, not Kenton), and Mary Ann was really Mary Ann Tucker, Emma's daughter from her first marriage. In 1883 the younger Emma Pidgeon married a cabinet maker Thomas Gundry. Both gave their address as 1 Vernon Street, Fulham on the marriage record. *

In 1891 Thomas and Emma Gundry were at the Somerset Arms, 17 Passmore Street.  *

Mary Payne must be Mary Pidgeon (née Cossey), Emma Payne’s mother who died in 1898 at 29 Brady Street, Whitechapel – the Roebuck, which was being managed at that time by Emma.  *
