The publican in the sixties and early seventies were Maisie and Jack Brace,
his was the idea behind the memorabilia hanging from the walls and ceiling,
also the lighting which gave the pub it's visual atmosphere, I worked as a
barman there from 1967 to late 1971. Fantastic pub always full of
interesting people from all walks of life. Thursday night was jazz night,
Martin Nicholls who played trombone with the London Philharmonic orchestra,
would arrive late on Thursday night, along with fellow musicians from the
orchestra all wearing white tie and tails and join in with the resident
band. The pub had a life all its own. It was a real local. **
