The proprietor of the Swan Tavern, Old Brompton, Kensington, in the censuses
of 1841 and 1851 was Richard Peck. The tavern isn’t named in 1851, but the
adjacent addresses (e.g. Lee Cottage) correlate to the census of 1841. *
I’m briefly pursuing this family’s history on behalf of the Friends of
Brompton Cemetery as the six-month-old Robert Peck was the second person to
be buried in the new cemetery, which opened for business in June 1840. Ellen
Peck, poignantly aged ‘4 years, 2 months’ was buried in the same grave in
1848. Robert’s address is given as ‘Old Brompton’, Ellen’s as ‘The Swan
Tavern, Old Brompton’. *
Richard and Mary Peck appear to have had several children, but clearly
valued those they lost as they chose the radically new option of cemetery
burial in a private family grave for them; Richard Peck was buried in the
same grave in 1869, after some years’ retirement at ’Sunnyside’, Mitcham
Road, Tooting. *
Richard Peck seems to have gone on to describe himself as a ‘retired wine
merchant’ in the census of 1861, and a ‘gentleman’ in his will (a familiar
trajectory for publicans who did well); if, as it appears, this is all the
same man, he left an impressive £6000, so he did well one way or another. *
