Mile End Pubs history
Drivers Arms, 1 Lawton road, Mile End E3 on June 26th 1970
Ian Roberts on right and Tony Case, lab technician, on left, wearing college scarf. Think he came in by motor bike from Ilford or maybe Romford. I remember the room on the left had a table football game. I remember John Bradshaw, who shared a room with Ian, was unbeatable if the ball entered “The Bradshaw Zone”.

The address is given as Longfellow Road in the 1882 Directory, and as 9 Lawton Road in the 1881 census. * Bill Lovelock, whose brother remembers drinking in this pub in the late 1970s; when it was called the Drivers Arms, as it was also referenced in 1950. It was burnt down in around 1980. ** It was also named the Drivers Arms in 1891 when a beer house, at 1 Lawton road.
Through the winter lockdown I got interested in Drovers and Drove Roads. Only just thought that the Drivers could have referred to Drovers. After selling the beasts at market, they would have been responsible for taking the money back to the farmers so they had to be completely trustworthy.
My interest arose from a Somerset dialect poem describing how a farmer escaped from highwaymen while riding home from London in the early 1700s. ***
