I have the following information regarding William Greenhill at the
Duke of Gloucester, from
Holdens Trienniel in 1805 & 1808. He is at the Mulberry Tree, Stepney Green
from Holdens Triennial of 1811. ***
Land Tax Records from 1808 show him at Gloucester Court, under a further
heading “In the Court”. By 1810 the Land Tax Records show him on Stepney
Green East, but listed towards the end of that address so most likely
towards the end of the street, the name of the proprietor of the property is
Capt Dryden with William listed as Occupier. Land Tax Records of 1811 & 1812
show the same information. In 1814 the proprietor is list as B Scutt with
William having House & Garden, 1815 shows the same, as does 1817. 1819 &
1820 records show William with the House & Garden but with 2 cottages &
garden added. Land Tax Records from 1824 show the same however as he had
died in March 1823 I believe it may have been his son William Mills
Greenhill that this record was referring to or did Sarah his widow carry on
the business herself. ***
Baptism places of his children also follow the moves of the William from The
Duke of Gloucester to Mulberry Tree, his earlier children were baptised in
various places also and I wonder if William was moving with his work from
licensed establishment to licensed establishment. ***
Sarah was referred to in later records as Licensed Victualler and Licensed
Victualler’s widow however I am yet to find any evidence where she was
Licensed under her own name. William Stevens and family are listed at the
Mulberry Tree in the 1841 census. Nearby at 4 Mulberry Gardens is Sarah
Greenhill and she has a grandchild with her on Census night. I am thinking
that this address may be one of the two cottages that was showing in the
land tax records of 1819 & 1820. ***

What I am now attempting to achieve is the coverage of an earlier London
street directory in 1832. This is unique, plus
images of the 1842 Robsons directory which confirm earlier entries and also
carry much more trade detail about a premises or person. Here is the index of streets in 1832, many with
1842 imagery added.
And next is the complete 1940 London street directory - this will take some months to complete, so bear with me!
