The Ship and Whale, Russell street, Commercial Docks, Rotherhithe in 1825; also the Ship and Whale, Russell street in the 1853 license transfer and also in 1869 and 1871 census. Next the Ship & Whale, 61 Derrick Street, SE16 until at least 1944. The modern address is at 2 Gulliver Street.
The present building dates from the 1880s, though I have an idea that it was in existence long before then. it was used mainly by workers in the whaling trade at Greenland Dock, and later by dock workers working with the Liners which used the Dock later on. It must have been set up in competition with the Dog and Dock and the Black Horse in Odessa Street. The Ship and Whale is now an excellent gastropub.... ***

What I am now attempting to achieve is the coverage of an earlier London
street directory in 1832. This is unique, plus
images of the 1842 Robsons directory which confirm earlier entries and also
carry much more trade detail about a premises or person. Here is the index of streets in 1832, many with
1842 imagery added.
And next is the complete 1940 London street directory - this will take some months to complete, so bear with me!
