Spread Eagle, 117 Rotherhithe Street, Rotherhithe, London

Rotherhithe index

Originally known as the The Shippe Inn (built about 1550). When this pub was destroyed by fire in the 1800's, it was rebuilt as a single storey building and renamed The Spread Eagle and Crown, the address being at 49 Rotherhithe Street in 1869 and earlier. Then in 1956 again renamed as the Mayflower, (the Pilgrim Fathers link).
The Spread Eagle and Crown was one of the few pubs in London that were licensed to sell both US and British postage stamps, having been a River Thames post office. The Spread Eagle and Crown, Rotherhithe is also mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes book, "Murder at Lodore Falls" and also the book "The Poisoned Island". ** The name Spread Eagle appears in a 1790 Sun Fire Office insurance record (clearly this pub, as the address is given as Church Stairs), so it must have been renamed by that time. * The 1842 Robsons directory lists it by Church stairs in Rotherhithe street.
