Bolt in Tun, 64 Fleet Street, St Dunstan in West, City of London

St Dunstan in West pub history Index

The Access to Archives site has just suggested that the Boars Head existed as early as 1441-42, i.e. "John, bishop of Bath and Wells, to grant a messuage called the Boar's Head next to the Bolt-in-Tun in Fleet Street in the parish of St. Dunstan-in-the-West to the prior and convent of the Carmelites in Fleet Street. London." in Henry V1 20. This pub was therefore present by 1443 and was demolished in 1853.  **

BOLT-IN-TUN, now a Railway Parcels' office, but once a great coaching house, derived its title from Prior Bolton of St. Bartholomew's, Smithfield, being a rebus or his name. A similar adoption of this rebus occurs in the death of Thomas Bolton, at the " Bolt and Tun," in Cornhill, August 1666, and " Job Bolton, at the ' Bolt and Tun,' in Lombard Street, who kept running cash in 1677. The Fleet Street house is mentioned in the Patent Roll, 21 Henry the Sixth, 1443, and in the parish registers 1629 and 1660. In 1665, on September 2nd, during the raging of the plague, is an entry:ó" A boy found dead in the hay-loft, in Boult-in-Tun Stables, was buried." In 1759, its host, Thomas Walker, was presented for entertaining disorderly women, &c. - Memorials of Temple Bar 1870

What I am now attempting to achieve is the coverage of an earlier London street directory in 1832. This is unique, plus images of the 1842 Robsons directory which confirm earlier entries and also carry much more trade detail about a premises or person. Here is the index of streets in 1832, many with 1842 imagery added.
And next is the complete 1940 London street directory - this will take some months to complete, so bear with me!
