St George in East Index
The earliest reference to this pub would seem to be a mention in court proceedings at the Old Bailey for 28th. July 1744. In 1839 listed as 19 Ratcliff Highway, before renaming to St George Street. This pub was rebuilt in the mid-twentieth century and by 1983 had been renamed the Caxton. The modern form of the address is 50 The Highway, E1 by 1940. *** It closed circa 2012 and is now a branch of Domino's pizza. * Also see The Highway in 1940

What I am now attempting to achieve is the coverage of an earlier London
street directory in 1832. This is unique, plus
images of the 1842 Robsons directory which confirm earlier entries and also
carry much more trade detail about a premises or person. Here is the index of streets in 1832, many with
1842 imagery added.
And next is the complete 1940 London street directory - this will take some months to complete, so bear with me!
