Commercial Chronicle (London) 07 November 1822
Robbery - The examination of Thomas Ingram excited a considerable degree of interest, he having till within these few months kept the Rising Sun public house in Bedfordbury.
Ingram is charged on suspicion of being concerned in robbing the house of Mr Thomas Hanstead, the Portobello public house, in St Martins lane. The robbery took place on the 10th of July last, between two and three o'clock in the afternoon, in a room on the second floor, when cash and banknotes to the amount of 343 pounds, together with three Spanish dollars, a watch, chain and seals were stolen. The robbery is particularly distressing, as the great portion of the money belonged to two Benefit societes held at that house, which Mr Hanstead is answerable for, and he is now paying the utmost by instllments.
In a few days after the robbery, a 40 pound and a 10 pound banknote part of the stolen property, were traced to John Wells, an Excise officer, who procured change for them from tradesmen he knew. He said he had them from Arnold Hunt, who he had known for twenty years, merely to get them changed for him. Hunt was taken into custody, and said he received them from his master, the prisonerv Ingram, when Hunt was discharged.
Ingram left his house and absconded, and has not been heard of since till the night of Tuesday night when Shields and Scott, two of the dismounted patrol belonging to the office, met him in Sloanes street, between eleven and twelve o'clock, and on seizing him he made a desperate resistance.
