Sporting Times 30 January 1909 - A Road Hog in 1808:
"A few days ago, as a fine girl, about nine years old, the only child of Mrs Jones, of the Rose and Crown, in St Martins lane, was crossing the street, she was rode over by a gentleman on horseback, who was riding at full speed; she received so violent a concussion on the head that no hopes are entertained of her recovery.

Mr Gill, landlord of the Rose and Crown, in St Martins lane, complained of a man who is going about in tavers &c, and under disguises, swindling the landlords. He came to his house about a fortnight ago, and in a few days ran up a bill of 16 pounds besides money he borrowed.
